Adverse Childhood Experiences

What are adverse childhood experiences or ACEs?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.gov), these are potentially traumatic events that occur in children between the ages of 0 and 17 years. These children often experience violence in their homes, community, abuse, neglect, family incarceration, death, and/or suicide.  Also included are aspects of the child's environment that may undermine safety, stability, and the ability to form healthy relationships.  ACEs are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance abuse in adulthood.  ACEs can negatively impact education and job opportunities.

What can WE do to reverse the negative impact these adverse childhood experiences have on our communities? This is OUR FIGHT and a matter of survival.  It is evident that there is no relief for black people unless WE CREATE the relief ourselves.  Time and time again, we have been misused and abused. Until we RISE UP and TAKE CONTROL of our situations and find solutions for our problems, we will continue to be plagued with dysfunction in our homes, in our children, in our relationships, and in our communities further crippling the vitality of our people.

What can we do to prevent ACEs? What resources are available to help families overcome and begin healing from these adverse traumas? The CDC reports that ACEs are common. In fact, 1 in 6 adults report that they have experienced at least 4 or more types of ACEs. By preventing these experiences many health conditions could be greatly reduced and/or eliminated.  The CDC reports that 1.9 million cases of heart disease and 21 million cases of depression could potentially avoided by preventing ACEs.

  1. The 3 kinds of environments are Natural, industrial, and social environment. I will mainly deal with the first one, Natural environment! These questions that follow, I believe, will help change the ACE’s in our future generations and impact their lives for the better.

Family, how you will be raised, the living situation, the conditions of your environment. I believe that families are like branches on a tree, we all grow in different directions, yet our roots remain the same. Do you remember what is the core of your family? What are you doing to and for your family now? How are you Leading your Family? What Legacy are you leaving? What is the Core (root)of your Family? What are your family values? Have you discussed what your family will or will not stand for. The Success of the family should focus on the Six D’s; Desire, Determination, Discipline, Devotion, Dedication, and Destiny. What are you doing To and For your Family? Being a man or woman, is not a position or title, it is action and example! You hold the seed within you! What would be said at your home going? Are you the solutions or problems to your children? How are you leading the Family? True leaders don’t create followers, they create more leaders! Be willing to listen to others, and be teachable, you are not right about Everything, Nobody is! You are never fully Grown, until you are Dead. As a parent, are you creating the Vision for your children to see and follow? How are you Creating the Family, how are you motivating the family or are you damaging it? Are you building a Culture of Innovation or killing it? Are you Producing Results and can you see it? What’s your leadership style;Visionary, Coaching, Affiliative, Democratic, Pacesetting, Or Commanding? Do you effect your family and what is your Affect on the family?Who will miss you when your gone (besides your mother)? Are you leaving a legacy for the next generation? Every Father and Mother should remember that one day his or her child will follow his or example instead of his or her advice. Will more than the current generation feel your effect from planning or just this current one? If you take the time and pay the Cost right Now, we can change and shape the future of our next 3 generations and leave a Legacy we all can be proud of!
